Building the image around the idea

Concept art finds the visual language; matte painting makes that world hold together.

I see concept art and matte painting as connected parts of the same job. One explores the visual language of a brief; the other makes that language feel coherent inside a finished frame. Both depend on composition, light, scale and a clear sense of what the audience needs to believe.

For Squarespace’s Hello Down There, directed by Martin Scorsese, I developed concept art and digital matte paintings for the grey alien, spaceship interiors and flying saucers. The work moved between creature ideas, detailed environments and large-scale UFO imagery, all serving the film’s playful alien-invasion world.

Whether I am exploring a mythical bird for Hoka or building an environment around a campaign image, the aim is the same: make the unusual feel specific enough to belong.
